Timecheck’s use of Beacon technology offers a low-cost, accurate solution for creating challenges and trails with 24/7 online leaderboards. The use of beacons as checkpoints allows people to follow participants progress in real-time and is as good for short courses as it is for endurance events. It's low cost means anyone can become an event organiser with beacons working well in low reception areas like forests and plantations, areas that are notoriously difficult to get GPS reception. Using Bluetooth low energy to communicate between the beacons and the smartphone also means the solution is more battery friendly than using a phone’s GPS.
